The Caribbean Writer – The Literary Gem of the Caribbean – has A New Editor and A New Look. Volume 24 is hot off the Press, and you want to make sure you purchase a copy.

Bold and decisive, Volume 24 of The Caribbean Writer features 80 pages of poetry, 200 pages of short-stories, and personal essays by established as well as emerging writers from the entire Caribbean Region, as well as the Caribbean Diaspora. In addition, there is a special 70 page tribute to three (3) of the Caribbean’s intellectual giants who passed last year, Rex Nettleford, Trevor Rhone and Wayne Brown; and completing this impressive collection are over 20 reviews of books by Caribbean writers and scholars.

The Caribbean Writer, an international literary journal published by the University of the Virgin Islands, showcases the literary production and visual works by Virgin Islanders as well as others from the greater Caribbean region. The Moko Jumbie cover was created by St. Croix’s own, Nesha Christian-Hendrickson, and the interior art is by the astute photographer, Ted Davis, whose studio is located downtown Christiansted. Other locals featured are UVI professors, Simon Jones-Hendrickson, Gillian Royes, Lomarsh Roopnarine, Valerie Combie, Lucia R. DiMeo and St. Thomian poet, Tregenza A. Roach. To maintain its high standard, the local editorial board was comprised of Edgar O. Lake, President of the Society of Virgin Islands Historians, and professors from both UVI campuses, Vincent O. Cooper, Patricia Harkins-Pierre and Robin Sterns.

The volume celebrates the 80th birthday of two of the Caribbean’s most prestigious writers, Derek Walcott from St. Lucia, poet and playwright, who own the Nobel Prize in 1992, and Kamau Brathwaite, Barbados, historian, poet and cultural critic, who won the coveted Griffin Poetry Prize in 2006.

TCW’s new editor, Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, an accomplished writer of 14 published books, comes to UVI from California College of the Arts where she was a full professor, and one of the core faculty to design and implement an MFA program there, an accomplishment she is planning to replicate here at UVI.

TCW invites the entire St. Croix community to come out to the launching of this issue on Friday September 30, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Great Hall of the St. Croix UVI campus. Come and celebrate the flourishing of words with music, entertainment and refreshments. Make sure and save the date.

Volume 24 of The Caribbean Writer is currently available at local bookstores on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John; as well as UVI bookstores on both islands. Copies can also be ordered directly from The Caribbean Writer’s office by calling (340) 692-4152, emailing orders@thecaribbeanwriter.org or visiting www.TheCaribbeanWriter.org. The Caribbean Writer is currently accepting submissions for Volume 25, the Anniversary issue dedicated to Haiti and the theme of freedom.
