Description
Possibilities: Beyond Tradition, Inside of Courage
The theme for Volume 39 is “Possibilities: Beyond Tradition, Inside of Courage.” It resonates deeply—how traditions, even when outdated, shape our lives and require boldness to redefine or move beyond them. This volume is presented in two parts. The decision to present this volume in two parts speaks to the overwhelming response from writers who resonate with this theme, and it’s clear that their voices are contributing to a truly significant conversation. In Part I, we compiled poetry, drama, book reviews, and personal essays. In Part II, we compiled a thrilling selection of short stories.
With this edition, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Safiya George, the 6th President of the University of the Virgin Islands. Originally from the Virgin Islands, Dr. George received both her associate’s and Bachelor of Nursing degrees at UVI. She continued her education at Emory University where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in HIV/AIDS and Oncology followed by a Ph.D. in Nursing Research.
Dr. George’s appointment adds yet another layer of richness to this edition. Her journey—from UVI to leadership and interdisciplinary engagement—is a testament to the very theme of possibilities beyond tradition. That she is also a poet brings an extra dimension to her role, blending academia and creativity in a way that feels deeply aligned with the mission of this publication.
The Caribbean imagination has long been a force of innovation and storytelling, and this edition promises to showcase that spirit beautifully. Enjoy!
